DVD installation, 20 mins, dimensions variable, UK, 2004
The rotating teahouse was used to make a video work that (literally and figuratively) explored the site through multiple viewpoints. A series of interviews with people who had moved to the area (domestic and foreigr migrants) were edited and the sound played against a video of a changing landscape, a fixed point of view filmed from inside the rotating teahouse.
The people spoke about their experiences of being foreign to the area and trying to belong. Themes that arose included feelings of disorientation and displacement, difficulties over language and accent, confusion about social etiquette, and a sensitivity towards the threshold of being invited into someone’s home.
A book was produced to accompany this work, Thought of as Foreign; for details, see the publications page.
